Sophos XGS 2100 firewall appliance

The Sophos XGS 2100 is a 1U rackmount network security appliance designed for mid-sized and distributed organisations. It combines an AMD x86 CPU with a Marvell NPU to run deep packet inspection, TLS 1.3 inspection and sandboxing without slowing traffic flow. Eight Gigabit copper ports and two SFP fibre ports provide flexible WAN and LAN connectivity out of the box.

Thermals noise and power in normal use

The unit ships in a 1U short chassis measuring 438 x 405 x 44 mm and weighs 4.7 kg unpacked. Dual-processor architecture offloads trusted traffic to a FastPath, reducing CPU overhead during typical operations. A second power supply can be added for redundancy, and the rackmount kit is included for standard cabinet installation.

Behaviour under sustained load

Firewall throughput reaches 30 Gbps while IMIX traffic runs at 16.5 Gbps and IPS inspection sustains 6 Gbps. TLS 1.3 inspection maintains 1.1 Gbps and IPsec VPN throughput hits 17 Gbps under continuous demand. Onboard storage is a single 120 GB SATA-III SSD with no RAID support, and 8 GB of DDR4 system memory backs the security engines.

Questions about this item

How do I rack-mount the XGS 2100 and what step is often missed?

The 1U short chassis fits a standard 438 mm rack; the included rackmount kit must be screwed to the side rails before sliding the 4.7 kg unit in, otherwise the front ports will not align.

Which component will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The single 120 GB SATA SSD has no RAID redundancy, so it is the first part likely to require replacement if it wears out or fails.

What throughput limit appears first when TLS 1.3 inspection is sustained?

TLS inspection tops out at 1.1 Gbps, well below the 30 Gbps firewall or 16.5 Gbps IMIX rates, so encrypted traffic hits that ceiling first.
