Ultra-compact handheld VHF transceiver delivers 6W transmit power, 600mW audio, preset key for 10 channels, NOAA weather alerts, FM broadcast receiver.
The Standard Horizon HX40 is an ultra compact handheld VHF transceiver designed for marine communication. It delivers up to 6W transmit power output and includes an FM broadcast radio receiver. The unit covers NOAA weather channels with weather alert capability. It suits boaters who need a portable radio for voice and weather monitoring on the water.
The radio features an ultra compact case design and floats when used with the optional flotation case SHC-29. A preset key recalls up to 10 favorite channels for quick access. An easy to operate menu system supports scanning operation and multi-watch including dual watch and triple watch. CH16/S provides quick access to the priority channel and sub-channel. Loud audio output reaches 600mW for clear reception in noisy environments.
The HX40 integrates a built-in lithium polymer battery pack rated at 7.4V and 1850mAh capacity. This internal pack powers the transceiver and FM receiver without requiring separate cells. Buyers who need user-replaceable batteries or extended runtime beyond the integrated pack should consider alternative models. The fixed battery design keeps the unit compact but prevents field swaps.

The HX40 transmits at 6 W output power, which is the maximum allowed for handheld marine VHF radios and provides typical ship-to-ship range of several nautical miles.
The radio itself is ultra compact and handheld; an optional SHC-29 flotation case makes it float if dropped overboard, otherwise no fixed mount is included.
It uses a built-in 7.4 V 1850 mAh lithium-polymer pack charged via the supplied cradle; users often forget to seat the radio fully so the charging contacts engage.
