Speaker size, RMS power and impedance: matching the system

Marine speakers come in standard sizes such as 4, 5.25, 6.5 and 8 inches, so measure the existing cutout and the mounting depth first. Compare RMS power, the continuous figure, not the peak number, and match it to the amplifier's RMS output at the speaker's impedance; 4 ohms is common. An amplifier stable at 2 or 1 ohm allows more speakers on one channel, but wiring them wrongly overloads it. Add up the speaker power before choosing the amplifier's channel count.

Marine-rated means sealed: moisture, UV and corrosion

Look for marine-rated receivers, speakers and amplifiers with sealed or coated electronics, stainless or plated hardware and UV-resistant cones and grilles; household electronics fail quickly in salt air. Check any ingress rating, as IPX6 means strong water jets are tolerated, and fit units where they avoid direct washdown. Receivers and sonar need their own flush-mount kits or pods, and a dedicated, fused power feed of adequate wire gauge. Two-way radios, such as VHF handsets, state their range and channel count.

Questions about Marine Speakers, Amplifiers and Boat Electronics

Do I need a separate amplifier for marine speakers?
Many marine receivers have a small built-in amplifier that drives a pair of speakers well enough. An external amplifier adds power and cleaner volume for more speakers or for listening over engine noise, but it needs its own fused power feed and a matching speaker impedance.
What does a flush-mount kit do?
It lets a radio or display sit level with the panel, using a trim bezel or bracket made for that model. Check that the kit is listed for your unit, measure the panel cutout, and allow depth behind the panel for the unit's body and cables.
Can I use car speakers on a boat?
They may work briefly, but car speakers are not built for spray, UV and salt, so cones tear and magnets and terminals corrode. Marine speakers use water-resistant cones, coated components and sealed connections, so choose them for exposed locations.
