The OM4 core supports 40GBase-SR4 and 100GBase-SR10 speeds that OM3 cannot sustain over the same distance. It remains backward compatible with existing 50/125 equipment, so you can replace older patch cords without changing transceivers. The jump is worth it when moving to 40 or 100 Gb/s VCSEL-based links at 850 nm.

Handles 40 and 100 Gb/s multimode runs

The cable comfortably carries 40GBase-SR4 and 100GBase-SR10 traffic over short-reach multimode segments. It runs out when the link requires single-mode distance, higher wavelengths beyond 850 nm, or connector types other than LC duplex. For those scenarios a different fibre type or connector is needed.
