A 6 ft USB-A to DB9 serial cable that adds an RS232 port with COM retention, powered from USB and rated up to 115.2Kbps
The StarTech ICUSB2321F adds a DB9 serial port to any computer with a USB A socket. It draws power directly from the USB connection so no external adapter is needed. The cable uses an FTDI UART chip to provide reliable COM port retention across reboots. Length is 6 ft and the maximum baud rate is 115.2Kbps.
Modern laptops and desktops rarely include native RS232 headers, making this cable the direct substitute for built-in serial I/O. The jump is worthwhile when industrial equipment, networking gear or point-of-sale devices still require a DB9 link. COM retention removes the need to reassign ports after every restart. No external power brick simplifies deployment in tight racks or field kits.
Engineers configuring routers, PLCs or legacy instruments will find the plug-and-play operation fits existing workflows. The male-to-male connectors mate with standard DB9 panels without gender changers. Buyers who need multiple simultaneous serial ports should look at multi-port alternatives. Users requiring galvanic isolation or higher baud rates will need a different class of adapter.

The cable has a USB Type-A male plug for the host and a DB-9 male connector for the RS232 device.
After plugging in the cable, you must install the FTDI driver so the adapter appears as a persistent COM port that survives reboots.
The USB Type-A plug and DB-9 connector see repeated insertion cycles, so the cable itself is the component that may eventually need replacement.
