Adds a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ45 port to compatible HPE switches with up to 100 m reach
This StarTech.com JD089BST transceiver provides a single RJ-45 port for 10/100/1000Base-T connections over twisted pair cable. It is designed for network administrators upgrading or repairing compatible HPE switches such as the 5820AF, 12500, 5500, E4800 and E4500 models. The hot-pluggable SFP form factor allows installation without powering down the switch. It delivers a 1 Gbps link up to 100 metres on Cat5e or Cat6 cabling.
The module operates reliably between 0 °C and 70 °C with humidity tolerance from 5 % to 95 % relative humidity. As a passive copper transceiver it draws minimal power and produces no audible noise, making it suitable for quiet rack environments. Storage temperature spans -40 °C to 85 °C for spares kept in unconditioned spaces. IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3ab compliance ensures standard Ethernet interoperability.
A free SFP mini-GBIC slot on a supported HPE switch is the only hardware requirement; no additional adapters or configuration tools are needed. The compact dimensions of 0.5 in by 0.5 in by 2.7 in and a weight of 0.06 lb leave adjacent slots unobstructed. Twisted-pair copper cabling eliminates the cost and complexity of fibre patch cords for short-range links. Lifetime warranty and free technical support back the deployment.

Slide the module into an SFP port until it clicks, then secure the bale latch; the step often missed is confirming the latch is fully engaged so the transceiver seats properly.
No scheduled maintenance is required; if the module fails or link errors increase, replace the unit — the hot-swappable design allows removal without powering down the switch.
The 70 °C operating-temperature ceiling is the first hard limit; sustained loads in warm racks can push the module toward that threshold.
