Low-profile PCI Express card adds two FireWire 800 ports and one FireWire 400 port
The StarTech PEX1394B3LP is a PCI Express expansion card that adds three FireWire ports to low-profile or small-form-factor computers. It provides two 1394b ports running at 800 Mbit/s and one 1394a port at 400 Mbit/s. A standard-profile bracket is included for use in full-height chassis. The card uses a native PCI Express chipset for direct bus connection.
This card suits users who need to connect DV cameras, external hard drives or audio interfaces that rely on the 1394 interface. It supports Windows from 2000 through 10, Server 2003 to 2016, Mac OS 10.6 to 10.12 and Linux kernels 3.5.x to 4.4.x LTS. Builders without a free PCI Express slot or who require modern high-speed interfaces such as USB 3 should consider other connectivity options.
The two 9-pin 1394b ports each deliver up to 800 Mbps bandwidth for demanding devices like high-definition video cameras. The single 6-pin 1394a port handles legacy 400 Mbps peripherals. Total throughput is shared across the PCI Express lane, so simultaneous heavy transfers on all three ports will saturate the available bandwidth.

Yes, the card uses a native PCI Express chipset and must be seated in a free PCIe expansion slot.
The 6-pin FireWire 400 port supports legacy 1394a devices at up to 400 Mbit/s alongside the two 9-pin 1394b ports.
Check the device manager or system profiler to confirm the 1394b ports are linked at 800 Mbit/s and run a file transfer to a FireWire 800 drive.
