This adapter connects an extra HDMI monitor to any computer with a USB 3.0 port. It uses a DisplayLink DL5500 chipset to drive resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz. The compact dongle measures 0.60 x 1.80 x 7.90 inches and weighs .14 lb. Audio is carried over the HDMI link without a separate cable.

USB 3.0 bandwidth limits 4K to 30 Hz

The USB 3.0 interface provides enough throughput for 4K at 30 Hz but not for higher refresh rates at that resolution. Widescreen modes such as 2048 x 1152 are also supported at 16 or 32 bit colour depth. There is no USB pass-through port on the adapter, so the host port is dedicated to video. Driver software must be installed from the supplied disc or a downloaded package.

Small enclosure with a short tether cable

The black plastic housing is 7.90 inches long including a 2.50 inch integrated USB 3.0 cable that plugs directly into the host. A full-size HDMI socket on the opposite end accepts any standard HDMI lead. No external power supply is required; the adapter draws all power from the USB bus.
