Compact Bluetooth 5.0 adapter

This StarTech USB Bluetooth 5.0 adapter adds wireless connectivity to a laptop or desktop through a USB 2.0 Type A port. The class 2 device reaches 33ft or 10m and supports a maximum data rate of 2 Mbit/s. It uses the RTL8761B chipset for native driver support on recent Windows and Linux systems.

For adding Bluetooth to a PC

The adapter suits users who need to connect keyboards, mice, headphones, phones or smartwatches without built-in Bluetooth. Buyers who require longer range or higher throughput than the 2 Mbit/s specification should look at a different solution.

Bluetooth 5.0 with EDR and BLE

The single specification that decides fit is Bluetooth 5.0 with Enhanced Data Rate and Bluetooth Low Energy. This combination determines which peripherals can pair, the 2 Mbit/s ceiling and the battery efficiency available to the host device.

Questions about this item

Which Bluetooth version does this adapter use and why does it matter?

It uses Bluetooth 5.0, which supports 2 Mbit/s transfer rates and Low Energy for longer battery life on connected peripherals.

What does the 2 Mbit/s rate mean when I am actually using it?

That is the maximum over-the-air speed for file transfers or audio streaming; real-world throughput will be lower due to overhead and distance.

The adapter plugs into USB 2.0 Type A — does that limit the connection?

The USB 2.0 port provides ample bandwidth for the 2 Mbit/s Bluetooth radio, so the interface does not create a bottleneck.
