Adds two RS-232 serial ports via a universal PCI slot with a SUN1989 controller supporting up to 115.2 Kbps
The SUNIX SER5037A adds two independent RS-232 serial ports to a desktop computer through a Universal PCI slot. It uses the SUN1989 controller which is compatible with the 16C950 UART standard. The card supports PCI specifications 3.0, 2.3, 2.2 and 2.1 at 33 MHz and works with both 3.3 V and 5 V bus signalling.
Each DB9 male connector provides the full set of nine signals including TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI and GND. The on-board controller offers 128 byte hardware FIFO buffers and supports baud rates from 50 bps to 115.2 Kbps. Every signal line carries +/-2 kV ESD protection under the Human Body Model. Driver packages cover Windows client and server releases from XP through 8.1, Linux kernels 2.4 to 3.x, DOS, FreeBSD, QNX, OS/2, SCO UnixWare and Solaris 10.
Verify that the motherboard has an available Universal PCI slot compatible with 3.3 V or 5 V operation before ordering. The printed circuit board measures 120 x 82 mm and the standard bracket is 121 mm wide, so confirm that the chassis can accommodate a full-height card. IRQ and I/O addresses are assigned automatically by the system, but legacy operating systems such as DOS or early Windows versions may require manual configuration. Buyers who need more than two serial ports or a different bus interface such as PCI Express should consider other models.

The card uses a SUN1989 16C950 compatible UART and DB9 male connectors; solid-state components and standard connectors typically last the life of the system without scheduled replacement.
Each port is rated to 115.2 Kbps with a 128-byte hardware FIFO, so the baud-rate ceiling and FIFO depth determine maximum continuous data rate.
The board has no fan and draws power only from the 3.3 V or 5 V Universal PCI slot, so it adds negligible heat and zero audible noise during continuous operation.
