Compact 1U rack chassis for Mini-ITX builds

The Supermicro CSE-505-203B is a 1U rackmount chassis only 9.8 inches deep. It accepts Mini-ITX motherboards measuring 6.75 by 6.75 inches and ships with a 200W 80 PLUS Gold power supply. The design targets firewall appliances, mail servers, web servers and other single-processor node deployments where rack depth is limited.

Fan-less thermal design runs at 30 dB

A fan-less thermal layout keeps acoustic output at 30 dB during normal operation. The included 200W Gold-rated supply delivers efficient power conversion without adding active cooling noise. Front-panel I/O provides one VGA, IPMI, four LAN ports, one COM, four USB and a combined keyboard and mouse connector for direct local access.

Four drive-configuration choices

Internal storage can be arranged as one 3.5-inch bay with a half-height half-length PCIe slot, two 3.5-inch bays, two 2.5-inch bays plus a full-height half-length PCI slot, or four 2.5-inch bays. Each layout requires the corresponding riser card and, for the 2.5-inch options, an additional HDD bracket. Front-panel controls include power switch, reset button and five status LEDs.

Questions about this item

How do I mount the motherboard and riser card in the CSE-505-203B, and which step is most often missed?

Install the 6.75" x 6.75" Mini-ITX board on the standoffs, then fit the required riser card into the single PCI slot before adding drives; the step most often missed is ordering the correct riser for the chosen drive-bay configuration.

What parts will need replacement or periodic attention after deployment?

The 200W Gold power supply is the primary field-replaceable unit; internal drive brackets for 2.5" bays and the riser card may need swapping if the storage or expansion layout changes later.

What is the first limitation reached during continuous operation in a 1U rack?

The 200W power budget caps total system draw, so sustained CPU and add-in card loads will hit that ceiling before the 30 dB thermal design or 9.8" depth become constraints.
