1U dual-Xeon server with four 3.5" bays

This 1U rackmount system ships with two Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 processors, each running at 2.60 GHz with 14 cores. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory are installed across two DIMMs. A MegaRAID 9361-8i controller provides eight internal SAS 12 Gb/s ports with 1 GB cache and battery backup. Four hot-plug 3.5-inch trays accept SATA or SAS drives, and quad 10GBase-T ports handle network traffic.

Suits dense virtualisation

The dual-socket layout and 24 DIMM slots support up to 1.5 TB of memory for memory-heavy workloads. IPMI 2.0 with dedicated LAN gives full remote KVM and virtual media access. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies keep the platform running during a module failure. Buyers who need more than four 3.5-inch spindles or who require 2.5-inch bay density should look at a different chassis.

Four 3.5-inch hot-plug bays define storage capacity

Only four large-form-factor drives fit in the front, so total raw capacity is limited by the number of 3.5-inch drives you populate. The onboard MegaRAID 9361-8i supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across those bays. If the application demands more spindles or a different drive form factor, this 1U model will not accommodate it.

Questions about this item

How loud or hot does the dual Xeon E5-2690 v4 14-core setup get with the 750 W platinum PSUs running 24/7?

The 1U chassis uses redundant 750 W platinum supplies and front-to-rear airflow; under full load the dual 14-core CPUs at 2.6 GHz will draw significant power and generate noticeable fan noise typical of dense rack servers.

What drives and caddies must I already own to populate the four 3.5-inch hot-plug bays?

The system ships with four 3.5-inch trays but no drives; you need 3.5-inch SATA or SAS hard drives or SSDs that fit the MegaRAID 9361-8i controller.

Will the LSI MegaRAID 9361-8i and quad 10GBase-T ports work with my older SAS-6Gb/s arrays and 1 GbE switches?

The 9361-8i supports SAS 12 Gb/s and is backward compatible with 6 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s drives; the Intel X540 10GBase-T ports auto-negotiate down to 1 GbE on legacy switches.
