Two Type-A USB 3.1 ports at 10 Gbps

This Syba add-in card adds two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports to a desktop through a PCI Express x4 slot. The ASMedia ASM1142 controller delivers up to 10 Gbps throughput and complies with the XHCI specification. It is backwards compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 devices. A SATA power connector must be attached for the card to function.

Suits builds needing fast Type-A ports on PCIe x4

Builders with an open PCI Express x4 slot who want two high-speed Type-A connectors for external drives or peripherals will find this card fits. It includes a low-profile bracket for small-form-factor cases and supports Windows 7 through 10 plus Linux kernels 2.6.31 and later. Systems lacking a free x4 slot or a spare SATA power lead cannot use this card. Users requiring Type-C connectors or more than two ports should look at other solutions.

PCIe 2.0 x4 interface with mandatory SATA power

The card connects through a PCI Express 2.0 dual-lane x4 interface and will not operate unless the onboard SATA power connector is plugged in. This single requirement decides whether the part works in a given build.

Questions about this item

What real-world throughput can I expect from the 10 Gbps rating once the card is installed?

The 10 Gbps figure is the bus ceiling for USB 3.1 Gen 2; actual file-transfer speeds will be lower and depend on the attached drive, cable quality and system load.

Which PCI Express link does the card use and how does that affect the 10 Gbps limit?

It runs on a PCI-E 2.0 dual-lane (x4) connection, which provides enough bandwidth to sustain the 10 Gbps USB rate without bottlenecking the controller.

What physical slots and brackets are required to mount the card?

The card fits a standard PCI Express slot and ships with a low-profile bracket for slim chassis; a full-height bracket is not included.
