12-Bay Desktop NAS Expansion Unit

The Synology DX1222 adds twelve SATA drive bays to a compatible DiskStation, letting administrators scale raw capacity without replacing the primary system. It is built for environments that need on-the-fly volume growth while keeping the existing DSM management layer.

Expansion cable and accessory pack

The bundled Mini-SAS HD cable links the DX1222 directly to the host DiskStation expansion port, so the extra bays appear instantly in DSM. The accessory pack supplies drive trays and screws, meaning no separate cabling or mounting hardware is required to populate all twelve slots.

1 GbE and Mini-SAS HD interface limits

A single 1 GbE port handles management traffic only; all storage throughput runs over the Mini-SAS HD link, so total bandwidth depends on the host DiskStation’s expansion controller rather than the unit itself. The twelve SATA lanes share that upstream connection, which can become a bottleneck under heavy multi-drive workloads.

Questions about this item

How many drives can be added later and what sizes does the DX1222 accept?

The unit has 12 bays that take 3.5 inch SATA HDDs, 2.5 inch SATA HDDs or 2.5 inch SATA SSDs, letting you expand capacity up to 192TB.

What limits total throughput when the DX1222 is under sustained load?

The single Mini-SAS HD expansion port links the unit to the host DiskStation, so the host's expansion bandwidth and the 12 SATA lanes set the practical ceiling.

How much power does the DX1222 draw and how much heat does it add when running all day?

It draws 57.71 W during access and 16.25 W with drives hibernating, operating within a 0°C to 40°C ambient range.
