Grey artificial-fur windscreen for TASCAM handheld recorders

TASCAM

TASCAM WS-86 Windscreen for Portacapture and DR Recorders, Gray

SKU CH-4GX4-ABMM7

A grey artificial-fur windscreen that blocks gust noise on Portacapture and DR-series handheld recorders while preserving audio clarity

  • Effective wind noise suppression with custom fit
  • Artificial fur blocks high wind gusts from mics
  • Compatible with Portacapture X8, X6 and DR series
  • Works with built-in mics in XY or AB position
  • High-quality materials reduce noise while keeping sound resolution

Purpose and compatibility

The TASCAM WS-86 is a dedicated windscreen built for the Portacapture X8 and Portacapture X6 recorders. It also fits the DR-07, DR-07X, DR-40, DR-40X, DR-44WL and DR-44WLB models. The accessory is intended for field recordists who need reliable wind protection for the built-in microphones on these specific handheld devices.

Wind suppression and acoustic transparency

High-quality artificial fur blocks strong wind gusts from reaching the internal capsules while preserving sound resolution. The design works with the microphones set to either XY or AB configuration. No power or signal processing is required; the screen simply slides over the recorder’s microphone array.

Build integration

The windscreen adds a lightweight layer that does not obstruct the recorder’s controls or display. It frees the operator from carrying separate blimp systems for handheld work. Buyers who need protection for external microphones or larger diaphragm capsules should look elsewhere, as the WS-86 is sized only for the listed TASCAM built-in arrays.

Questions about this item

How do I fit the WS-86 windscreen onto my Portacapture X8 and which orientation should I use for the built-in mics?

Slip the WS-86 over the recorder’s integrated microphone capsule; it fits both XY and AB positions so you can leave the mics in whichever stereo pattern you prefer.

Does the artificial fur on the WS-86 degrade or need replacing after heavy outdoor use?

The fur is made for audio applications and resists normal field wear; inspect it periodically and replace only if fibres mat down or tear.

At what wind speed does the WS-86 stop suppressing gust noise on a DR-40X?

The WS-86 is designed to block even high wind gusts; in sustained extreme winds the fur surface itself becomes the limiting factor.
