What it converts

The Tengchi R18 converts analogue composite video and stereo audio from RCA sources into an HDMI 1.3 signal at 720p or 1080p. It is intended for owners of legacy consoles such as PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, N64, VHS, VCR or DVD players who want to connect them to a modern TV or monitor without analogue inputs.

Interface limits

The adapter accepts PAL, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N composite formats and outputs a maximum of 1080p over HDMI 1.3. It does not support 3D, 4K or reverse conversion from HDMI to RCA. Power must be supplied from an external 5 V 1 A USB source using the included Micro USB cable.

When to upgrade

This unit replaces a direct RCA-to-HDMI cable or an older scaler that cannot handle the listed broadcast standards. The jump is worth it when the source device only provides composite output and the display lacks analogue inputs, but it will not help if the source already offers component, S-Video or digital outputs.

Questions about this item

Which Tengchi R18 version should I pick for a single composite source?

The box includes one RCA-to-HDMI converter, an HDMI cable, a USB power cable and a manual — everything needed for one composite device.

What does the 1080p output mean when I connect my PS2?

The converter up-scales the composite signal to 1080p or 720p so the console can be displayed on a modern HDMI screen.

What limits does the HDMI 1.3 interface impose on this adapter?

HDMI 1.3 caps the output to 1080p resolution and does not support 3D or 4K formats.
