Drive capacity and fit

The Toshiba MK1234GSX is a 120GB 2.5-inch laptop hard drive spinning at 5400 RPM with an 8MB cache. It suits owners of older notebooks or external enclosures that still rely on the SATA 1.5Gb/s interface for storage expansion or replacement.

Build integration

The bare drive slides into any standard 2.5-inch SATA bay and connects through the 1.5Gb/s link without additional adapters. Its mechanical design leaves the system’s faster ports free for solid-state boot drives while adding bulk capacity for archives or backups.

Sustained workload behaviour

Under continuous read or write activity the platters maintain 5400 RPM with an average seek time of 12ms and latency of 5.55ms. The 300,000-hour MTTF rating indicates suitability for long-running tasks such as media libraries or scheduled backups rather than bursty application loads.

Questions about this item

What sustained throughput can the 5400 RPM platters deliver?

The drive spins at 5400 RPM with a 1.5 Gb/s SATA interface and 8 MB cache, so sequential throughput is limited by the mechanical platters and the 1.5 Gb/s link.

How much heat and noise does the MK1234GSX produce during all-day operation?

The 5400 RPM spindle and 12 ms average seek keep acoustics and thermals low for a 2.5 inch laptop drive, drawing modest power from the SATA bus.

Which SATA host connector and power source must the laptop already provide?

The drive requires a standard SATA 1.5 Gb/s data connector and the matching 5 V SATA power pinout found in any 2.5 inch drive bay.
