Connects legacy serial devices to modern USB ports using a reliable FTDI chipset for broad OS compatibility
The TRENDnet AQ-17 converts a USB 2.0 Type-A port into a male DB9 RS-232 connection using an FTDI chipset. It targets engineers, network administrators and hobbyists who need to configure routers, switches, PLCs, barcode scanners or legacy serial peripherals from a modern laptop or desktop. The six-foot cable length suits bench work and rack-side access without stretching.
Many current PCs and most laptops no longer include a native DB9 port, so this adapter restores that capability for console access, firmware updates and industrial equipment programming. The jump is worth it when a USB-only machine must talk to gear that speaks only RS-232 at up to 1 Mbps, and driver support across Windows 11 through XP, macOS and Linux removes the need for a dedicated legacy workstation.
The FTDI chipset maintains stable COM-port enumeration and baud-rate settings during long configuration sessions or automated test scripts. USB bus power eliminates an external supply, while gold-plated connectors and PVC jacket resist wear from repeated insertion and cable routing in workshop environments.

The cable is 6 ft long and ends in a male DB9 connector, so it will reach most rack-mounted gear from a nearby USB port.
Download the FTDI driver from the official FTDI site first, then plug the adapter in; Windows will then assign a COM port automatically.
The chipset is soldered into the moulded cable assembly, so the whole 6 ft converter must be replaced if the chip fails.
