PCMCIA Wireless G adapter

The TRENDnet TEW-421PC is a 32-bit CardBus Type II card that adds 802.11g wireless networking to a laptop. It operates on the 2.4 GHz band and delivers data rates up to 54 Mbps with automatic fallback to lower speeds. The card includes an integrated 2 dBi dual diversity antenna and supports WEP plus WPA security. It fits any notebook with a standard Type II PCMCIA slot.

For legacy notebook upgrades

This adapter suits owners of older laptops that lack built-in Wi-Fi or need a replacement for a failed internal card. It works in both ad-hoc peer-to-peer and infrastructure access-point modes. Buyers whose machines only have ExpressCard or M.2 slots cannot use this card. It also does not meet the needs of users who require 5 GHz operation or modern WPA2-AES encryption.

CardBus Type II interface

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 32-bit CardBus Type II interface. The laptop must provide a matching PCMCIA slot; newer ExpressCard, USB or internal M.2 connections are not compatible. Without this exact slot the adapter cannot be installed or used.

Questions about this item

Does the TEW-421PC CardBus adapter run hot when used continuously?

The adapter is rated for 0°C to 40°C operating temperature and draws power from the PCMCIA slot without a separate fan or heatsink.

My laptop only has a 32-bit CardBus Type II slot — is that enough for this card?

Yes, the TEW-421PC plugs directly into any 32-bit CardBus Type II slot and needs no external power or driver CD beyond the included resource disk.

Will this 802.11g card connect to my older 802.11b router at 11 Mbps?

It supports both IEEE 802.11g and 802.11b standards and automatically shifts down to 11, 5.5, 2 or 1 Mbps when linked to an 802.11b access point.
