Four-computer USB 3.1 sharing switch

The TRENDnet TK-U404 lets four computers share a single set of USB peripherals. It presents four upstream USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports for the host PCs and four downstream Type-A ports for devices such as keyboards, mice, flash drives or scanners. A Micro-B port supplies bus power so no external adapter is needed. The unit is driverless and works with Windows and Mac systems.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 bandwidth ceiling

Each port operates at the USB 3.1 Gen 1 signalling rate of 5 Gbps, shared among whatever devices are active at the moment. The switch is backwards compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1 peripherals, so older kit will connect but run at its own lower speed. Total throughput cannot exceed the single 5 Gbps upstream link, so heavy simultaneous transfers from multiple drives will queue.

Four upstream ports fixed

The switch provides exactly four computer ports and four peripheral ports; it cannot be expanded or cascaded to support more hosts. Buyers who need to share devices across five or more computers will need a different solution. The included cabling covers the four PC connections, and the 1.6 kg unit sits on the desktop without rack mounting.
