A KVM switch has to match the video and keyboard connections of every computer it serves: HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or D-Sub (VGA) for video, and USB or, on older gear, PS/2 for the keyboard and mouse. One box can mix connection types, and the port count is the number of computers it controls, from 2 or 4 up to 16. Mixed types, such as a DisplayPort computer on an HDMI switch, rely on adapters. The supported resolution, up to 3840 × 2160 on newer models, must cover your monitor.
Switching method decides how pleasant daily use is. Push buttons on the box are simplest, hotkeys let you switch from the keyboard, and a wired remote or desktop controller keeps the box out of the way. If you need to share more than a keyboard and mouse, such as a printer or webcam, look for a model with extra USB sharing ports. Rack consoles and IP KVMs, which fit a 19-inch cabinet, add a built-in screen or network access for remote servers.
