  • Direct serial link using RS-232 DB9 male connector
  • Gray adapter connects legacy serial to Ethernet-style port

Console Access Adapter

This RS232 DB9 male to RJ45 female adapter provides a direct console link to commercial-grade networking equipment. It lets administrators access and configure routers and switches that expose a serial management port. The gray housing identifies the cable in a crowded rack. No driver installation is required for the physical connection.

Serial Port Required

The DB9 end plugs into a host computer's native serial port or a USB-to-serial converter that the builder must supply separately. It frees the network device from needing a dedicated monitor and keyboard for initial setup. Buyers whose systems lack any RS-232 interface will need an additional adapter before this cable can be used.

Questions about this item

How far can the DB9-to-RJ45 link reach before the signal degrades?

The adapter is a simple gender changer; the distance limit depends on the serial cable and Ethernet patch lead you connect, not on the adapter itself.

Does the adapter generate any heat or noise during continuous use?

No, it is a passive connector with no electronics, so it produces no heat and makes no sound.
