10Gb RJ45 PCIe x8 Network Card

This add-on card provides a single 10Gb Ethernet port using the Intel X540-BT2 controller. It fits a PCI Express x8 slot and works in x8 or x16 slots. The card includes both low-profile and full-height brackets for standard or slim systems. Windows, Linux and VMware ESXi are supported.

Cabling limits on 10Gbase-T

The port runs at 10Gb over copper using 10Gbase-T signalling. Category-6A cable reaches 100m or 328ft. Category-6 cable is limited to 55m or 180ft. The PCIe 2.1 interface operates at 5.0 GT/s across eight lanes.

Single-port 10Gb copper connectivity

This card delivers exactly one 10Gb RJ45 connection. Buyers who need multiple 10Gb ports or fibre interfaces must choose a different adapter. The Intel X540-BT2 controller handles the single link and SR-IOV virtualization.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the single-port X540-BT2 or a dual-port card for my server?

This card provides one 10Gb RJ45 port; choose it when you need a single 10G link and want the low-profile bracket included.

What does the 10Gb figure mean once the card is installed in a PCIe 2.1 x8 slot?

The x8 lane at 5.0 GT/s gives enough bandwidth for full 10GbE line rate, so the single port can sustain 10 Gb/s with Cat6a up to 100 m.

Which PCIe standard does the X540-BT2 use and what speed does it cap at?

It uses PCI Express 2.1 x8 running at 5.0 GT/s per lane, which caps the interface at the card's rated 10 Gb/s Ethernet throughput.
