PCIe x1 Firewire expansion

The Vszerda adapter adds three IEEE 1394a ports to a desktop through a single-lane PCI Express 1.0a slot running at 2.5 Gb/s full duplex. It targets users who need to connect legacy DV cameras, external drives or audio interfaces that still rely on Firewire 400/800 signalling.

Low-profile bracket and port mix

A low-profile bracket is included for slim chassis, while the standard bracket fits full-height cases. The card supplies two 9-pin bilingual ports and one 6-pin port, all compliant with IEEE 1394-1995, 1394a-2000 and OpenHCI 1.0/1.1. No hot-plugging is supported; power must be off before insertion.

Transfer rates and OS limits

Supported data rates are 100, 200, 400 and 800 Mbps, with backward compatibility across the 1394a family.

Questions about this item

Does the PCIe x1 2.5 Gb/s lane cap the FireWire 800 Mbps ports under sustained use?

The x1 lane provides 2.5 Gb/s full duplex, which is more than double the 800 Mbps maximum of the 1394a ports, so the bus is not the bottleneck.

How much heat or power does the card draw when all three ports run all day?

The card draws power from the PCIe slot and has no active cooling; typical FireWire controllers run cool enough for continuous operation in a desktop case.

Which Windows versions are supported for plug-and-play operation?

Windows XP, Vista and 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) are listed as compatible with no driver installation required.
