USB 56K External Dial-Up Fax Modem

This USB 2.0 modem delivers up to 56K download speeds, 48K data upload and 14.4 Kbps fax mode for users who still rely on a telephone line. It complies with V.92, V.90, V.42, V.42bis and MNP5 protocols. The compact, lightweight design makes it simple to carry and connect to any compatible computer.

Thermals, noise and power

The device draws power directly from the USB port and has no internal fan, so it runs silently and adds negligible heat to a workstation. Typical operation stays well within standard USB 2.0 current limits without requiring an external adapter. Its small enclosure dissipates warmth passively during extended dial-up sessions.

Bundled CD driver disc

A driver CD is included for older or reduced Windows 7 installations that cannot use the native plug-and-play support found in Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and standard Windows 7. The disc also covers Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and Mac systems. No additional software utilities or cables are supplied in the package.

Questions about this item

How do I install the USB 2.0 dial-up modem on Windows 10, and what step often gets missed?

Plug the modem into a USB port; Windows 10 usually installs the driver automatically, but some reduced Windows 7 builds require the CD-ROM driver, so run that setup first if the device is not recognised.

What maintenance or replacement will the external fax modem need later?

No internal consumables exist; keep the USB connector and phone cord clean, and replace the unit only if the V.92 link fails to train at 56 Kbps download or 48 Kbps upload.

What limit appears first during a long dial-up session?

The telephone line quality caps the sustained data rate at 56 Kbps download and 48 Kbps upload, while fax transmission tops out at 14.4 Kbps under Group 3 protocols.
