Enterprise SAS hard drive for data centres

This Western Digital DC HC520 drive delivers 12 TB of storage on a SAS interface spinning at 7200 RPM in a 3.5 in form factor. It is built for servers and storage arrays that require continuous operation and high-capacity bulk storage. The product is new and intended for professional IT environments rather than home desktop PCs.

SAS 12 Gb/s interface limits

The SAS connection runs at 12 Gb/s, so the host controller or backplane must support that speed to achieve full throughput. Performance will fall back to the highest mutually supported link rate if older 6 Gb/s or 3 Gb/s infrastructure is used. Cable length, connector quality and simultaneous device count on the same domain also affect sustained bandwidth.

Installation notes for 3.5 in SAS drives

The drive fits standard 3.5 in hot-swap bays or fixed mount points using the SAS data and power connectors. Common issues include mismatched backplane pinouts, missing SAS expander firmware updates and insufficient airflow in dense chassis. Verify that the RAID or HBA controller recognises the drive before deploying it in a production array.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12 TB version of the HUH721212AL4205 or a smaller capacity?

The HUH721212AL4205 is offered as a single 12 TB model; choose it when you need the maximum raw capacity this drive family provides.

What does the 7200 RPM rating mean once the drive is installed in a server?

At 7200 RPM the platters spin at a constant enterprise speed, giving consistent latency for RAID arrays and heavy write workloads.

How does the SAS 12 Gb/s interface limit real-world transfer rates?

The SAS 12 Gb/s link caps the burst transfer at 12 Gb/s, so sustained throughput will stay below that ceiling depending on workload and controller.
