74 GB 10 000 RPM SATA drive

The Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive with a 74 GB capacity. It spins at 10 000 RPM and connects via a SATA 1.5 Gbps interface with a 16 MB buffer. This new drive is built for desktop systems requiring faster rotational speeds than standard drives.

Suits older desktops needing low-latency storage

This drive suits enthusiasts maintaining legacy workstations or servers where a 10 000 RPM SATA drive is the specified replacement. Builders needing higher capacity for modern workloads or a 6 Gbps SATA III interface should look at other options.

10 000 RPM spindle speed

The 10 000 RPM spindle speed is the defining specification. It determines the drive's random access performance and latency profile, making it suitable only for systems designed around this rotational speed and the SATA 1.5 Gbps interface.

Questions about this item

What sustained-write speed limit appears first during long sessions on the 10000RPM WD740ADFD?

The 1.5Gbps SATA interface caps maximum throughput, so sustained writes cannot exceed that link speed regardless of the 10000RPM platter rate.

How much heat and noise does the WD740ADFD produce when running continuously?

The 10000RPM spindle and 2.0 pound chassis create noticeable seek noise and steady warmth, so plan for active airflow in the drive bay.

What must my desktop already have to install this 3.5" SATA drive?

A free 3.5-inch drive bay, a SATA data cable, and a SATA power connector from the power supply are required.
