Purpose-built surveillance storage

The WD Purple WD23PURZ is a 2TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive engineered for video surveillance systems. It uses Conventional Magnetic Recording and a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface to handle continuous write workloads. The drive is designed for mainstream installations that record multiple camera streams around the clock.

Upgrade from desktop drives

Standard desktop drives are not rated for the sustained write patterns of surveillance recording. This model supports up to 180 TB per year workload rate and includes WD AllFrame technology to reduce frame loss. The jump is worth it when a system records several high-definition channels simultaneously and needs reliable long-term operation.

Capacity and headroom

At 2TB the drive comfortably stores weeks of footage from a modest camera count at typical bit-rates. A 64MB cache helps absorb bursty write traffic from multiple streams. It runs out when retention requirements grow or when additional cameras push the annual workload beyond the rated threshold.

Questions about this item

Will the 26.1 mm height fit my 3.5" drive bay?

Yes, the drive is 26.1 mm tall, 101.3 mm wide and 147 mm long, matching the standard 3.5" form factor used in most desktop cases and surveillance enclosures.

Which SATA cable and power connector do I need, and what step is often missed?

Use a standard SATA 6.0 Gb/s data cable and a 15-pin SATA power connector; the step often missed is enabling AHCI mode in the BIOS before the operating system detects the drive.

How long before the 64 MB cache or CMR mechanism needs replacement?

The CMR recording technology and 64 MB cache have no scheduled replacement; the drive is rated for 180 TB per year workload, so plan a refresh when your total written data approaches that annual figure.
