500 GB 7200 RPM desktop drive

This WD Blue hard drive adds 500 GB of mechanical storage to a desktop or all-in-one PC. It spins at 7200 RPM and connects through a SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The 3.5 inch form factor fits standard drive bays.

32 MB cache and SATA cable not included

The drive ships with a 32 MB buffer to smooth burst transfers. No mounting screws, cables or software utilities are bundled in the box. You will need a spare SATA data cable and power connector from the system.

Suits capacity upgrades on a budget

This unit suits builders who need affordable bulk space for documents, media or backups alongside a faster boot SSD. It is not for users who require solid-state speeds, silent operation or a 2.5 inch form factor for slim chassis.

Questions about this item

How often should the 32MB cache be serviced or replaced?

The 32MB cache is a solid-state buffer built into the drive electronics and has no moving parts. It requires no scheduled maintenance or separate replacement during the drive's service life.

Which limit appears first during sustained transfers — the 7200RPM spindle speed or the SATA 6Gb/s interface?

The 7200RPM spindle speed and mechanical head movement set the maximum sustained throughput. The SATA 6Gb/s link is faster than the drive can continuously feed, so the mechanical limit is reached first.

What are the noise and heat levels when the drive runs continuously at 7200RPM?

At 7200RPM the drive produces typical desktop HDD noise — audible seek clicks and a steady spindle hum — and its surface temperature rises to normal operating range for a 3.5-inch mechanical drive.
