Enterprise-grade performance

The Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000BHTZ is a 500GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 10000 RPM with a 64MB cache. It targets workstations, high-end video and photo editing, low-end servers and performance enthusiasts who need enterprise-class speed in a laptop form factor.

15mm Z-height and SATA connectivity

The bare drive measures 15mm in height, 69.85mm wide and 100.45mm long, so it fits only bays that accept a 15mm drive. A SATA 6.0Gb/s interface provides the data link, and Advanced Format, RAFF, NoTouch ramp load and Pre-emptive Wear Leveling work together to protect data during daily operation.

Mechanical limits of a 10K SATA drive

Rotational latency and seek time are bounded by the 10000 RPM spindle, so sustained throughput cannot match solid-state storage. The 6.0Gb/s SATA ceiling caps burst speed, and the 500GB capacity fills quickly with modern media files, requiring additional drives for larger libraries.

Questions about this item

What does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface mean for real-world throughput?

The 6.0Gb/s link sets the bus ceiling; the 10000 RPM platters and 64MB cache determine the actual sustained read and write rates you will see.

Will the 15mm height fit my 2.5-inch bay or caddy?

The drive measures 15mm tall, 69.85mm wide and 100.45mm long; verify your laptop or enclosure accepts a 15mm-high 2.5-inch drive before purchase.

Are there jumpers or settings to configure before installing the bare drive?

No jumpers are required; connect the SATA data and power cables, secure the drive with four M3 screws, then initialise and format it in the operating system.
