This enclosure turns any 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or solid-state drive into an external USB storage device. It accepts drives of 7 mm or 9.5 mm height and supports capacities up to 3 TB. The tool-free design lets you swap drives in seconds without opening a case. No drivers are required for the listed operating systems.

Capacity and headroom

The unit handles SATA I, II and III drives up to the 3 TB limit stated by the manufacturer. Drives larger than 3 TB are not supported and will not be recognised. The 70 percent speed improvement quoted for the UASP protocol applies when the host system also supports UASP; without it the enclosure falls back to standard USB 3.0 bulk transfers.

USB 3.0 interface limits

Data moves through a JMS578 controller rated for 6 Gb/s, matching the SATA III ceiling. The USB 3.0 connection itself caps real-world throughput below that theoretical maximum, so sustained SSD reads and writes will not reach the controller's peak. The enclosure draws power from the USB port, so very high-draw drives may need a powered hub or Y-cable not included here.
