Getting grime out of small parts: solvents and ultrasonic tanks

Parts-washer fluids dissolve grease and oil from components, but check whether they are petroleum-based, bio-based or water-based, since flammability, fumes and gloves all differ. Small ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency vibration in a liquid; a 50 kHz unit with a tank of about 650 ml suits jets, injectors, fittings and jewelry-size parts. Larger parts need a bigger tank, and solution must cover the part and its holes completely.

Crush washers, rubber washers and banjo bolts: sizes and materials

Sealing washers are chosen by bore size, outer diameter, thickness and material. A banjo bolt, such as M10 x 1.25 or M8, needs a washer on each side of the fitting, and copper or aluminum crush washers should be replaced at every service because they deform to seal. Rubber washers vary: nitrile suits oils and fuels, while EPDM suits water and glycol brake fluid but swells in petroleum oil.

Questions about Parts Cleaners, Ultrasonic Tanks and Washers

What size ultrasonic cleaner do I need?
Choose a tank that holds your largest part with solution covering it fully and a little room around it. A small tank suits jets, injectors and fittings; bigger components need a larger tank or another method. Use a basket so parts do not touch the tank wall.
Can I reuse banjo bolt crush washers?
Replace them. Copper and aluminum crush washers deform to seal and harden when compressed, so a used one may leak. Fit a new washer on each side of the banjo fitting and tighten to the torque in the service manual.
Are solvent parts washers safe to use indoors?
Only with good ventilation and no ignition sources nearby. Many solvents are flammable or give off fumes, so read the safety data sheet, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep the lid on when not in use. Water-based cleaners are gentler but still call for gloves.
