Soil, surface and the strength of cleaner to use

Degreasers range from heavy-duty concentrates, often alkaline, for engines and garage floors to gentler bio-based sprays for bicycle drivetrains, and special foam cleaners for ovens and grills. Match the product to the soil and the material: strong alkaline cleaners can etch aluminum, dull paint and stain plastics, while oven cleaners are meant only for ovens. Rust removers act differently: dissolving types need thorough rinsing, while converters turn rust into a paintable layer that stays in place, and either way the metal needs a protective coating afterwards.

Dilution, contact time and safe handling

Concentrates must be diluted to the ratio on the label: too strong risks damage, too weak leaves grease. Give the product the stated contact time, agitate with a brush, then rinse. Work in a ventilated place, wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, and never mix cleaners, since some combinations release toxic gas. Keep products in their original labelled containers, and keep overspray away from brake parts, electrical connectors and rubber seals.

Questions about Degreasers, Engine Cleaners and Rust Removers

Can I spray engine degreaser on a hot engine?
Let the engine cool until just warm, cover the alternator, air intake and exposed electrical connectors, and spray as the label directs. Rinse with low-pressure water. Hot metal makes some products dry too quickly and leave residue, while strong spray can force water into connectors.
Are degreasers safe on painted surfaces and aluminum?
Not all of them. Strong alkaline or solvent degreasers can dull paint, stain plastics and etch aluminum. Check the label for compatible materials, dilute concentrates as directed, test a hidden spot and rinse promptly.
How should I dispose of degreaser and oily rinse water?
Do not let oily runoff reach storm drains. Soak up liquid with cat litter or absorbent pads, and take used cleaner and oily waste to a local hazardous waste or recycling site, following local rules.
