Sizing shore power: 30 amp, 50 amp and cord gauge

RV shore power comes in two main plugs. A 30 amp service uses a three-prong plug and delivers 120 V only, while a 50 amp service uses a four-prong NEMA 14-50 plug with two 120 V legs. A 50 amp extension cord is labeled with its conductors, for example 6/3 plus 8/1, meaning three 6 gauge conductors plus an 8 gauge ground. Lower gauge numbers are thicker, and longer runs need thicker wire to limit voltage drop.

Adapters let a plug fit a different pedestal, but they do not change the capacity. A 50 amp cord on a 30 amp outlet through an adapter can only draw 30 amps, so a total load beyond that trips the breaker. Check the plug type on each end, the amp rating of the adapter, and whether it is rated for outdoor use. Damaged or hot plugs should be replaced, not taped.

Battery chemistry, charger voltage and small hardware

Batteries in this list are described by chemistry and voltage, such as lithium or UPS-style sealed lead-acid, 6 V or 12 V. Lithium and lead-acid need different charging profiles, so a charger or rectifier module must be set for the chemistry and the full voltage, for example a charger that tops out near 14.4 V for a 12 V lead-acid battery. Check the module's output voltage and current, and size cables and fuses to the highest current.

Small hardware needs the right hole and wire size. Rubber grommets are sized by the hole diameter, such as 10 mm, and protect cables from sharp edges; hole plugs close unused openings. Junction boxes list inside dimensions, for example 55 by 35 by 15 mm, so check there is room for the splices. Thin 22 gauge wire suits low-current signal and lighting circuits, not appliance feeds.

Questions about Batteries, Cords and RV Power Parts

Can I plug a 30 amp RV into a 50 amp pedestal?
Yes, with a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter. The RV then draws from one 120 V leg of the pedestal and is limited to 30 amps by its own wiring. Use an adapter rated for outdoor use, and keep total loads below that limit.
Why does a longer extension cord need thicker wire?
Wire resistance adds up over distance, so a long, thin cord loses voltage and heats up under load. Thicker conductors, with a lower gauge number, carry the same current with less loss. For a long run at 50 amps, use the heaviest cord you can handle and keep the plugs fully seated.
Can I swap a lead-acid battery for lithium without changing the charger?
Not always. Lithium batteries need a charging profile with different voltage limits, and some chargers have a setting for it while others do not. Check the charger's supported chemistries and the battery maker's charging limits, and look at whether the battery has its own protection circuit.
