Four-flat, seven-way and what each connector carries

Connector style decides compatibility. A 4-flat plug carries ground, tail lights and the left and right stop-and-turn circuits. A 7-way adds a wire for electric brakes, a reverse-light wire and a 12 V supply for charging a trailer battery or running accessories. The round 7-way and the blade 7-way styles do not plug into each other, so check the shape of your vehicle's socket, not only the pin count.

Electric trailer brakes need a brake controller in the tow vehicle, which sends a braking signal either in proportion to how hard you stop or on a set time delay, and in many places a breakaway switch that applies the brakes if the trailer separates. Brake wiring should use the correct wire gauge for the brake current, with sealed connections. Check the connector current rating and protect the circuit with a fuse or breaker.

Locks, magnetic lights and loads: sizes to check

Hitch locks and coupler locks are sized to the coupler or receiver, with common coupler sizes of 1-7/8, 2 and 2-5/16 inches, so a lock listed for all three covers the usual range. Wheel lock clamps hold a wheel against theft and are sized to the tire. Magnetic LED trailer lights stick to steel and run on 12 V, which makes them handy for temporary use, but a trailer in regular use needs permanent, correctly wired lights.

Racks and small trailers are rated by load. A ladder rack lists its length and its weight capacity, such as 500 lb, and a dump trailer lists its capacity in pounds and cubic feet. Check that the vehicle's roof, bed or hitch can carry the rating, and that the trailer's width and tongue weight suit the tow vehicle.

Questions about Trailer Brakes, Lights and Wiring Connectors

Do I need a brake controller?
If your trailer has electric brakes, yes: the controller sends a variable signal to the brakes when you press the pedal. Surge brakes, which work hydraulically when the trailer pushes against the coupler, do not need one, but electric-over-hydraulic systems do. Whether brakes are required at all depends on the trailer weight and local rules.
Which size coupler lock fits my trailer?
Check the coupler size on your trailer, which is typically 1-7/8, 2 or 2-5/16 inches, and choose a lock listed for that size. Some locks fit several sizes. Make sure the lock's pin fits the latch hole snugly with no gap.
Can magnetic trailer lights replace permanent ones?
They are a temporary solution. They run on 12 V and need to sit securely on a steel surface, and wiring that is exposed or routed loosely can fail. Rules for lights on a trailer used on public roads differ by region, so use permanent, approved lamps for regular towing.
