Benchtop apparatus: capacity, voltage and what it connects to

Rotary evaporators, glass reactors, short-path distillation sets and cooling chillers are sold by capacity in liters, from 1 L bench units to 50 L pilot sizes. Fill a flask to no more than about half so there is room for boiling and foam. These systems rarely work alone: an evaporator needs a vacuum pump and a chiller, and a reactor needs heating or cooling circulation. Check each listing for what is included.

Electrical supply is the next trap. Units are made for 110 V or 220 V mains, and a 220 V unit on a 110 V outlet will not run properly. Glassware joints are sized by taper and length, such as 24/40, and only the same size mates without an adapter. Look for borosilicate glass and PTFE seals where solvents are involved.

Consumables: size, chemistry and the model they fit

Consumables are sold by fit. A membrane or cap kit is made for a named probe family, microscope slides follow the standard 1 x 3 inch (25 x 75 mm) size, and cover slips come in thickness grades. Nitrile gloves are chosen by size and thickness, and for chemical splashes by the resistance data the maker gives. Foam swabs for fiber optic connectors are sized to the ferrule, 1.25 mm or 2.5 mm.

Spill kits are matched to what may spill. Universal absorbents handle water-based liquids and oils, oil-only products repel water and take up hydrocarbons, and chemical or hazmat kits are made for aggressive liquids. Capacity is quoted in gallons or liters of liquid absorbed, so size the kit to the largest container you handle. Check what is included, such as gloves, goggles and disposal bags.

Questions about Laboratory Equipment and Supplies

What size flask suits a rotary evaporator?
Pick a flask that the solvent fills no more than about half, and make sure the evaporator and its bath accept that flask size and joint. Bench units commonly work at 1 to 5 L, while 10 L and above are for larger batches and need stronger vacuum and cooling.
Are glass joints interchangeable between makers?
Yes, if the taper size and length match, because joints such as 24/40 follow a standard. A 19/22 joint will not mate with a 24/40 one without an adapter. Always lubricate or sleeve joints as directed, and check ground surfaces for chips before use.
How do I choose a cooling chiller?
Match the cooling power, shown in watts at a stated temperature, to the heat your apparatus produces, and check the flow rate and tubing connectors. A chiller sized too small cannot hold temperature in a reactor, while a larger one gives headroom for bigger flasks later.
