Hose bore, couplers and thread: the connectors that must match

Air hose is sized by inside diameter, typically 1/4 or 3/8 inch. A 3/8 inch hose passes more air over distance and suits air tools that use a lot of it, while 1/4 inch is lighter and fine for inflators and small tools. A longer hose loses pressure, and the working pressure rating of the hose, in psi, must exceed the compressor's maximum.

Quick couplers are not universal. Industrial, automotive and ARO profiles look similar but do not interchange, so plugs on the tools must match the coupler on the hose. Threads are usually 1/4 inch NPT; use thread sealant or tape on tapered threads. A variable nozzle or blow gun is sized by its orifice, such as 1.25 mm, which affects both force and air consumption.

Compressor oil and air tool lubricant: grade and purpose

Compressor oil and air tool oil are different products. Compressor oil lubricates the pump, and its viscosity grade, such as ISO 68, should be the grade the compressor maker specifies, because oil that is too thick or too thin harms the pump. Food-grade (FG) oils exist for food-processing plants. Never use ordinary motor oil unless the manual permits it.

Air tools take their own lubricant, a few drops in the inlet or a line oiler, to protect vanes and bearings. Inflators are a separate group: manual pumps, battery units and 12 V models that plug into a vehicle socket. Look at the maximum pressure, the hose and chuck type for Schrader or Presta valves, and whether the unit is meant for continuous use or short bursts.

Questions about Air Compressor Hoses, Oils, Nozzles and Inflators

What does ISO 68 mean on compressor oil?
It is the viscosity grade: oil that is about 68 centistokes at 40 degrees Celsius. Use the grade the compressor maker lists, because the pump is designed around that thickness. Synthetic and mineral oils can share a grade but are not always mixable, so do not mix types.
Which air hose diameter do I need?
Use 1/4 inch for tire inflation, brad nailers and light work, and 3/8 inch for sanders, impact wrenches and longer runs, where flow matters. Keep the hose as short as practical, and choose fittings at least as large as the hose bore.
Can I use compressor oil in my air tools?
No. Compressor oil is meant for the pump crankcase. Air tools need pneumatic tool oil, a few drops in the inlet before use or from an in-line oiler. Check the tool manual, since some tools are lubricant-free.
