Will it run from your car or from a wall outlet?

Portable compressors divide first by supply voltage. A 12 V unit runs from a vehicle battery or accessory socket, so it suits roadside and trail use, but the current it draws is the limit: heavier 12 V models are meant to be clamped or wired straight to the battery rather than plugged into a lighter socket. Plug-in units at 120 V or 230 V run longer and faster, but only where an outlet exists, and the voltage must match your supply. Then check maximum pressure against the job, since car tires need far less than larger truck tires.

Three numbers that describe a compressor

Three figures describe how a compressor behaves. Maximum pressure, in PSI or bar, sets what it can fill. Airflow, in CFM or liters per minute, sets how fast. Duty cycle is the share of each period the pump can run before it must cool, so a low figure means short bursts with rests between. Horsepower claims on small units are often peak figures, so compare airflow at a stated pressure instead. High-pressure PCP pumps, which fill air-rifle reservoirs, work at thousands of PSI and are a different tool from a tire inflator.

Questions about Portable Air Compressors and Tire Inflator Kits

Can a 12 V compressor inflate truck or RV tires?
Only if its pressure rating and duty cycle cover the tire. Large tires need more air and longer running time than a small inflator provides, so look for kits rated for your tire size and connect them as the maker instructs.
What is the difference between PSI, bar and CFM?
PSI and bar measure pressure, the force the air can push with, and one bar is about 14.5 PSI. CFM measures the volume of air moved per minute. Pressure decides what you can fill; CFM decides how long the job takes.
Is an A/C compressor the same as an air compressor?
No. An A/C compressor is a vehicle air-conditioning part with a clutch and refrigerant fittings. It cannot inflate tires or run air tools. Check the product type and whether the listing mentions a clutch, refrigerant or a vehicle fitment list.
