Size the buckle to the strap width

Measure the strap before anything else. A buckle's size is the width of the webbing or strap it holds, such as 1/2 inch, 1 inch or 1-1/2 inches, and a buckle that is too wide lets the strap slip while one that is too narrow will not fit through. Webbing thickness matters too. Side-release buckles clip and unclip with one hand, ladder-lock or slide buckles adjust length, and snap hooks clip a loop to a ring. Multi-piece packs cover a whole project.

Plastic, zinc or stainless steel?

Material sets strength, weight and weather resistance. Plastic buckles are light and quiet, which suits bag straps, binocular harnesses and shock cord, but they can crack in the cold or under heavy loads. Zinc alloy is strong and takes finishes such as silver or gunmetal, though it can corrode if the plating wears. Stainless steel resists rust best for outdoor or marine use. Check whether a listing states a load rating; decorative buckles and novelty belt buckles are not designed to hold weight or support a person.

Questions about Buckles, Clasps and Snap Hooks

How do I measure the size of a buckle?
Use the inside width of the slot the strap passes through, which should match the strap's width. Measure the webbing itself rather than trusting the label, then choose the buckle of that width, as an oversized buckle will not hold.
Are plastic buckles strong enough for bags and harnesses?
For light to moderate loads, yes. Quality side-release buckles are used on bags and binocular harnesses. They are not the right choice for lifting or safety use unless the listing states a load rating, and cold weather can make some plastics brittle.
What is a snap hook used for?
A snap hook clips one end of a strap, lanyard or cord to a ring, loop or D-ring and closes with a spring gate. A swivel type turns freely to prevent twisting. Choose by the opening size and material; light-duty hooks must not carry heavy loads.
