Matching case class to motherboard size

Cases are named by the largest board they hold. Mini-ITX cases are compact, Micro ATX towers balance size and expansion, ATX mid towers are the common choice, and E-ATX or full towers give room for large boards and big cooling. A case lists the boards it supports, such as ATX, Micro ATX and Mini-ITX together, and smaller boards always fit larger cases. Check slot count too, since a Micro ATX board has fewer expansion slots.

Housing material shapes weight and noise. Steel frames are rigid, tempered glass panels show the build but add weight and can break, and plastic or ABS trims save mass. Front panel ports such as USB-C should match a header on your motherboard, because a case connector with no matching header stays unused. Color and lighting are cosmetic, but airflow openings and dust filters are practical.

Clearance numbers: graphics card, cooler and power supply

Three listed limits cause most surprises. The maximum graphics card length, for example 340 to 430 mm, must exceed your card including any power cable at the end. The CPU cooler height limit, such as 160 to 185 mm, decides whether a large tower air cooler fits. The power supply length limit matters for high-wattage models, which are often deeper than basic ones.

Allow extra room for cable bends and a front radiator, and check the number of fan and radiator mounts if you plan liquid cooling. Drive bays have shrunk in modern cases, so count 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch bays against your storage plans. Airflow matters as much as size: a mesh front helps hot components, while sealed panels are quieter but trap heat.

Questions about Tower and Desktop PC Cases

Will an ATX motherboard fit in a Micro ATX case?
No. A larger board does not fit a case built for smaller boards. A Micro ATX or Mini-ITX board does fit an ATX case, so check the supported board sizes in the listing.
How do I know if my graphics card fits?
Compare the card's length with the case limit and leave 10 to 20 mm spare for cables and fans. Also check the card's thickness in slots and any front radiator that could reduce the space.
Do I need a case with a glass panel?
No. A glass panel only shows the inside of the build. Choose it for looks, but remember it adds weight and can trap heat, so compare airflow and filter options as well.
