Socket and chipset: the compatibility gate

The socket decides what you can use, so check it before anything else. AM4 and AM5 are the AMD sockets, while LGA 1700, LGA 1851 and the older LGA 1151 are Intel's. A processor only fits a board with the same socket, and a new chip may also need a BIOS update on an older board. AM5 supports DDR5 only, while LGA 1700 boards come in DDR4 and DDR5 versions.

LGA 1151 needs care: boards in the 100 and 200 series work with one group of chips, and the 300 series with another, so the plain socket name is not enough. Used and open-box chips appear, sometimes sold without a cooler or box, so read the condition note. Retail chips often include a cooler, but high-end ones do not, so plan for one.

Cores, cache and TDP: reading the performance lines

More cores help with video editing, rendering and heavy multitasking, while games often respond more to per-core speed and cache. Hybrid chips list performance and efficient cores together, such as 8P plus 16E for 24 cores. Models with a stacked cache, marked X3D, are aimed at games. L3 cache sizes run from 8 MB on small chips to 96 MB or more on X3D models, and the thread count shows how many tasks run at once.

TDP is a cooling guide, not a power meter. A 65 W chip is happy on a modest cooler, while 105 W and 125 W parts need a solid tower or liquid cooler, and boost power can exceed the rating. Suffixes matter: an F on an Intel part means no integrated graphics, so you need a graphics card, and a K means unlocked for overclocking on a compatible board.

Questions about Desktop CPUs: Sockets, Cores and Cache

Do I need a new motherboard for a new CPU?
Only if the socket or chipset differs. A new chip on the same socket often works after a BIOS update, but a different socket always needs a matching board. Check the board's CPU support list.
How many cores do I need?
Six to eight cores are plenty for gaming and everyday use. Video editing, rendering and virtual machines benefit from twelve or more. Faster cores matter more than extra cores for most games.
Can I reuse my old CPU cooler?
Often yes, if the cooler's mounting kit lists the new socket. Coolers for AM4 usually mount on AM5, and LGA 1700 coolers usually fit LGA 1851, but older LGA 1151 mounts differ.
