Wattage headroom and the connectors your graphics card needs

Add up what the processor and graphics card can draw at full load, allow for the board, memory, drives and fans, and choose a supply comfortably above the total. Headroom keeps the unit cooler and quieter and covers short power spikes. The graphics card decides the connectors: many cards use two or three 8-pin PCIe leads, while newer high-power cards use the 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector, which ATX 3.x supplies usually provide natively. Count the leads on the supply and compare.

Type labels matter for older and branded machines. ATX12V and EPS12V cover current boards, plain AT is a long-obsolete layout, and proprietary supplies are made for specific branded machines with non-standard connectors, so match them by the original part number. Also check the supply's input range: most accept 100 to 240 V automatically, but a few have a 115/230 V switch that must be set correctly before first use.

Efficiency tiers, modular cables and fitting the case

The 80 PLUS ladder climbs from Bronze through Silver, Gold and Platinum to Titanium, and each step wastes less power as heat; Cybenetics grades supplies on a similar scale. A better tier lowers heat and fan noise more than it lowers running cost, so it matters most in small or quiet builds. Full-modular units detach every cable, semi-modular keep the motherboard cable fixed, and non-modular have all cables attached. Finally measure the case: the length of the supply must fit the space the case allows, with room for cables.

Questions about ATX Desktop PSUs: Wattage, Efficiency, Connectors

How many watts does my PC need?
Add the maximum draw of the processor and graphics card, then allow for the board, memory, drives and fans. Pick a supply above that total so it runs cooler and quieter. Graphics card makers publish a recommended supply size on their product pages.
Is a modular power supply better?
Modular supplies let you attach only the cables you need, which tidies the case and helps airflow. They do not make the electronics better; judge quality by efficiency rating, protections and the connectors provided, not by modularity alone.
Can I reuse my old supply with a new graphics card?
Only if it has enough spare power on the 12 V rail and the connectors the card needs. A high-power card may need a newer 12V-2x6 lead, which older supplies lack, and adapters do not add capacity.
