Two jobs: holding keys or proving who you are
This area covers two kinds of device that look similar but do different jobs. Offline key storage devices are hardware wallets: they keep the private keys for blockchain assets inside a secure chip and sign requests without ever exposing the key to your computer. Authentication keys and tokens confirm that you are the person logging in, usually by a touch, a code or both, as a second step after your password.
Connection, compatibility and the backup you must plan
Whichever you choose, check three things. Connection: USB-A and USB-C plug into computers, while NFC and Bluetooth models work with phones. Support: a wallet must support the networks and tokens you hold, and an authentication key must support the services you log in to. Backup: a wallet has a recovery phrase or backup cards, and a login key should be registered alongside a spare. Losing a device without a backup can mean permanent loss of access.
Questions about Security Keys and Hardware Wallets
- Is a hardware wallet safer than a software wallet on my phone?
- It keeps the signing key in a dedicated chip that never exposes it to the computer, so malware on the PC cannot read it. You must still protect the recovery phrase, because anyone who has it can rebuild the wallet.
- What is the difference between a wallet and a security key?
- A hardware wallet signs for blockchain assets and holds the keys to them. A security key proves your identity when you log in to accounts. They serve different purposes, so one does not replace the other.
- What happens if I lose the device?
- With your recovery phrase or a backup card you can set up a new device and regain access. Without a backup, the assets or accounts it protected are generally unrecoverable, so keep the backup offline and apart from the device.
