Touchscreen device, card or ring: how you will use it
Hardware wallets come in three shapes. Touchscreen models with a built-in display, some with Bluetooth, let you read each transaction on the device itself before approving it, which is the strongest protection against a compromised computer. Card models are slim enough for a wallet and are used with a phone or computer app. Ring models are worn on the finger and come in sizes, so check the size chart and choose the size carefully. Sets that include backup cards give you spares of the same wallet.
Supported assets, backup method and security checks
Check that the device supports the networks and tokens you hold, since support differs between models and changes with firmware updates. Understand the backup method before you start: some use a written recovery phrase, others use backup cards that carry the same wallet. Keep any backup offline, never photograph it and never type it into a website or app. Inspect the packaging for signs of tampering, and read durability ratings, such as dust and water resistance, if the device will travel.
Questions about Hardware Wallets: Card, Ring and Touchscreen Models
- How does a hardware wallet keep my keys safe?
- It generates and holds the private key inside the device and signs transactions there, so the key never reaches your computer or phone. Malware can still show a wrong address on a computer screen, which is why on-device confirmation matters.
- What is a recovery phrase and where should I keep it?
- A list of words that can rebuild your wallet on a new device. Write it on paper or metal and keep it offline in a safe place. Never photograph it or type it into a website, because anyone who has it can take your assets.
- Which type should I choose: touchscreen, card or ring?
- A touchscreen model lets you check details on the device and suits regular use. Cards and rings are compact and easy to carry, and usually rely on a phone app to review details. Check supported networks first.
