Flash, LED or both: how the light behaves

Studio flashes, or strobes, give a burst of powerful, daylight-balanced light that freezes motion, with power rated in watt-seconds. Continuous LED lights stay on, so you see the result live and can use them for both stills and video, but at the same size they are less intense. Colour quality is rated by CRI or TLCI; look for 95 or higher when skin tones matter. Colour temperature near 5600 K matches daylight, and bi-colour models adjust.

Mounts, modifiers, stands and triggers: what has to match

Lights and modifiers connect through a mount, such as the common S-type or a maker-specific one, so a softbox only fits a light with the same mount or an adapter. Stands list a maximum load and height; heavier heads need a sturdier stand. Radio triggers must match the flash system and the camera hot shoe. Gels change colour or balance tungsten, and gaffer tape secures cables safely. Speedlights also appear here; they follow the TTL rules of their camera system.

Questions about Photo Lighting: Strobes, LEDs, Modifiers and Stands

How much flash power do I need?
For portraits and products in a small studio, 100 to 300 Ws monolights are plenty; larger rooms, big modifiers or outdoor work against daylight need 400 Ws or more. Power can be turned down, so a little spare headroom is useful.
Can I use LED lights instead of flash for portraits?
Yes, for static portraits and video, since you can see the light as you adjust it. For freezing motion or overpowering the sun, a flash is stronger. Choose LEDs with high colour rendering and enough output for your room.
What is a softbox for?
A softbox enlarges the light source and diffuses it, giving softer shadows and gentle highlights. The larger it is relative to the subject and the closer it sits, the softer the result. It must fit your light's mount or an adapter ring.
