Finding the right lamp for a rear-projection DLP set

Rear-projection DLP televisions, the deep cabinet sets sold in the 2000s, mostly use a lamp as their light source. Flat LED, LCD and OLED panels have no lamp to replace. Start with the model number on the back or side panel of the TV, for example an HL-series model, and look for a lamp listed for that exact model. Lamp part numbers and model-based lamp codes appear in the titles, so compare both with your manual.

A lamp supplied in its housing with the connector attached makes the swap simple and keeps fingers off the glass. Do not assume that two similar-looking lamps are interchangeable: the housing shape, connector and wattage differ between lamp families, and a lamp that physically fits may still not strike or may run too hot.

Lamp hours, the reset step and a safe swap

Unplug the set and let it cool for at least half an hour before opening the lamp door, since the lamp stays hot long after switch-off. These lamps contain mercury and can shatter, so handle them carefully and take the old one to a recycling point. After fitting, reset the lamp timer if your model has that option, because the TV may otherwise keep warning about hours or shut down early.

Questions about DLP TV Lamps and Bulbs: Finding the Right One

Why does my DLP TV switch off or flash a lamp warning?
A blinking lamp or standby indicator often points to a worn lamp, though blocked vents and dust can cause overheating shutdowns too. Clean the vents, check the manual's indicator guide, then replace the lamp if its hours are near the rated life.
Can I change the lamp in an LED or LCD TV?
No. Those sets are lit by a backlight built into the panel, LEDs in most models and fluorescent tubes in older LCDs, which is not sold as a consumer lamp. This category is only for rear-projection DLP televisions and projectors that use a lamp, so a flat panel with a dim picture needs a different diagnosis.
Where is the lamp part number?
Look on the old lamp, in the manual's replacement section, or on the model label of the TV, and match it against the title. If two numbers differ only by a suffix, compare the housing and connector in the pictures, since variants may differ.
