Body, kitchen or room: the measuring range decides

Thermometers here are built for very different jobs, and the measuring range gives it away. A body thermometer covers a narrow span around body temperature, for example 32 to 42 degrees Celsius. An infrared surface thermometer reads a very wide range for cooking or industrial surfaces, up to hundreds of degrees, and is not designed for people. Meat, oven and grill probes and outdoor stick thermometers have their own ranges. Match the range and the intended use.

Reading distance, accuracy and reading time

Non-contact models state a reading distance, such as 1 to 5 centimeters, and a reading time of one to five seconds. Accuracy is listed as a plus or minus figure, for example 0.2 degrees Celsius. Forehead readings are affected by sweat, drafts and a recent cold or warm environment, so wait a few minutes after coming indoors. Baby rectal thermometers are listed separately. Battery type, often AAA cells, is usually noted and sometimes not included.

Questions about Digital Thermometers and Hygrometers

Can I use an infrared cooking thermometer on a person?
No. Surface infrared thermometers are built for a wide range of object temperatures and are not calibrated for body temperature. Use a thermometer designed for human use, and follow its instructions for the measuring site.
What does plus or minus 0.2 degrees accuracy mean?
The reading may differ from the true temperature by up to 0.2 degrees Celsius either way. That is a lab figure for the sensor, and technique, distance and a clean lens affect real-world results.
What type of thermometer is suitable for a baby?
Rectal readings are often advised for the youngest infants, with other types allowed as the child grows. Ask your pediatrician, use a model designed for the site you will measure, and clean it after each use.
