Hole count and spacing: your sink decides the faucet

Count the holes in the sink or countertop and measure from the center of the outer holes. A single-hole faucet fits one hole and often has one lever. A centerset faucet puts spout and two handles on one base for holes 4 inches apart. A widespread faucet has separate spout and handles that fit holes spaced 6 inches or more apart, commonly 8 inches.

Flow rate, aerators and the supply connections

Flow is rated in gallons per minute. Aerators mix air into the stream to cut water use while keeping the feel; 1.5 gpm is a common water-saving rating for bathroom faucets, and some areas require 1.2 gpm or less. Aerators come in different thread sizes, male or female, so match the one on your spout. A supply line usually runs from the angle stop's 3/8 inch compression outlet to the faucet's 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch connection, so check both ends, the length and whether the stop turns by quarter turn.

Questions about Bathroom Sink Faucets and Supply Fittings

Can I put a single-hole faucet on a sink with three holes?
Yes, if the faucet comes with a deck plate, also called an escutcheon, that covers the two unused holes. Without one, the extra holes will show. Check that the plate's size spans the hole spacing on your sink before you buy.
What does gpm mean on a faucet?
Gallons per minute is the flow at normal supply pressure. A lower number saves water, and many bathroom faucets run at 1.2 or 1.5 gpm. The aerator sets the flow, so swapping a worn or clogged aerator is the easy fix for a weak or sputtering stream.
How do I remove a stuck aerator?
Turn it counterclockwise by hand, using a cloth to protect the finish. If it will not budge, soak it in vinegar to loosen mineral deposits and use pliers with tape on the jaws. Some aerators need a small key tool. Rinse out debris before refitting.
