Reading light, room glow or mood wash?

A floor lamp does one of three jobs, and the design follows the job. Reading needs a directed beam at head height, so look for an adjustable arm or swivel head. Room glow comes from an uplight or a wide shade that bounces light off the ceiling. Mood lighting is where corner and color-changing lamps sit, washing a wall from behind a sofa. Tall arching models reach over furniture but need clear floor for the base, so measure the footprint as well as the height.

Built-in LED or a socket you can refill

Integrated LED lamps offer only the brightness and color settings built in at the factory, and the whole lamp is usually replaced if the LED fails. Socket lamps take an ordinary bulb, so check the base (E26 is common in North America) and the maximum wattage marked on the socket. A socket also lets you swap warm 2700K for neutral 4000K later. Dimming is only available when the listing says so, usually through an inline rotary switch, touch control or remote.

Smart corner lamps with app control normally join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, so a router set to 5 GHz only will not see them during setup. Stability matters too: arc lamps depend on a heavy base, and cast-iron counterweights are sold separately for some designs. Households with pets or toddlers should favor a wide, heavy base.

Questions about Floor Lamps: Arc, Corner and LED Uprights

How tall should a floor lamp be for a reading chair?
Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit near eye level when you are seated, which gives light without glare. Most standing models run roughly five to six feet, while arc designs rise higher but reach out over the seat.
Will a wall dimmer control a plug-in floor lamp?
Rarely. A floor lamp plugs into an outlet, so a wall dimmer normally has no effect on it. Look for a built-in dimmer, a touch control or a remote, or add a plug-in dimmer rated for LED loads between the lamp and the outlet.
How many lumens does a floor lamp need?
For an uplight that lights a whole room, look for roughly 1500 lumens or more, depending on the room's size. A reading lamp is comfortable at 400 to 800 lumens, and a color-wash corner lamp can be far dimmer because it is decoration, not task light.
