Match the part to the disposal, not the sink

Most listings here are parts and care items rather than whole disposal units. Discharge tubes, power cords and baffles are often made for a particular maker and series, so find the model name and number on the label of your unit before looking. Strainers and sink baffles are sold by diameter, in the three-inch range, and must match the drain opening in your sink. A baffle is the rubber splash guard in the throat of the unit; when it tears, food and water spray back out.

Cleaners, tools and what should never go down

Cleaning tablets and foaming cleaners remove odors and film from the grinding chamber, while ice cubes and citrus peel give a light scrub. If a unit jams, switch off the power first and use a wooden spoon handle or the hex socket many units have under the base; never reach in with a hand. Keep grease, fibrous stems such as celery, large bones, coffee grounds in bulk and starchy peel out of the drain, and run cold water while grinding.

Questions about Garbage Disposal Parts, Strainers and Cleaners

How do I know which baffle or strainer fits?
Measure across the drain opening in the sink and compare it with the diameter in the listing, then check the disposal series named. A baffle for one series may not seat on another, even when the opening is the same.
Why does my disposal smell, and what helps?
Food film on the splash guard and chamber causes most smells. Run a cleaning tablet or ice and citrus peel with cold water, and clean the underside of the baffle with a brush. Avoid harsh chemicals that can harm seals.
Can I replace the power cord myself?
Many units use a cord kit that screws into a plate on the base, but you must disconnect power first and use a kit made for your model. If the unit is hardwired, leave it to a qualified person.
